Some idle speculation on theology
Sep. 13th, 2019 09:25 pmThinking about Stapledon tends to lead to thinking about God as the consummate artist. In Star Maker Stapledon depicts God as creating universes with tragedy, death, and suffering because these heighten the beauty of the universe. Which isn't inherently different from Joss Whedon killing off characters to heighten the drama. And we don't call Whedon evil for killing Fred. The difference, I suppose, is that Whedon's characters are ultimately philosophical zombies; they have no interior experience because they're actually just actors. So, does God know we have an internal experience? And if she does, does that make her evil, or just working towards a good that isn't concerned with the happiness of her creations?
