Torment: Tides of Numenera
Jan. 5th, 2019 05:57 pmThis game is sold as a spiritual successor to the excellent Planescape: Torment and I'd say it mostly holds up. I have some complaints about gameplay mechanics (turn-based play in "crises" is really, really slow and tedious and only being allowed three companions* is stupid), but the characters are excellent, the art is beautiful, and the stats and alignment system is honestly way better than Planescape's D&D-inspired system.
*Even moreso than Planescape, which companions you have seriously impacts story and aspects of gameplay and even being allowed one more companion would have been a serious boon. Also, why is that one blond dude a potential companion? What's up with that?
Like Planescape, it's a story-based game, and the story is essentially that you wake up falling from space with no memories and, honestly rather quickly, learn that you're the latest in a long line of bodies discarded by the Changing God and all of the bodies are being hunted down and how the fuck are you going to survive? It gets more complicated, and the story is well-integrated with the worldbuilding.
The biggest problem is the ending, which sucks. TVTropes got it pretty accurately:
( Spoilers )
I came away feeling pretty dissatisfied, whereas the ending of Planescape is honestly what makes it as good as it is. I'd still recommend it if you can get it on sale
